Category:9th Street campus of the University of Pennsylvania (1800–1874)
Appearance
English: From 1800 to 1874, the University of Pennsylvania was located on the west side of 9th Street, between Market and Chestnut Streets. Initially, classes were taught in the never-used Presidential Mansion (completed 1797), built as part of an effort to retain the national capital in Philadelphia beyond 1800. The Presidential Mansion was demolished and replaced in 1829 by twin brick buildings -- Collegiate Hall and Medical Hall -- designed by architect William Strickland. These buildings housed the university until its move to West Philadelphia in 1872. The current building at the site, the former U.S. Post Office and Federal Building, was constructed in 1935.
