Hi everyone,
Wikimedia Commons is pleased to finally announce the winners of this year's Picture of the Year 2025 contest! We had some truly incredible finalists to choose from, but the community has spoken.
Here are your top three winning images:
First place: The aftermath of an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on October 9, 2023, leaving widespread destruction in the Rimal area. Attribution: WAFA (Q2915969) / CC-BY-SA 3.0
Second place: Baby cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus) sleeping at Cape cross, Namibia. Attribution: Giles Laurent / CC-BY-SA 4.0
Third place: A gigantic jet photographed from the International Space Station by astronaut Nichole Ayers. Attribution: public domain
You can view the full results and see where all your favorite images placed here: Full 2025 Results
I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.
Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!

Hi, you commented on my featured picture nomination that it might be a good idea to keep the original image instead of doing a D&R. I agree and think both images would make a great set, how should I go about doing to this? Should I edit the nomination or withdraw it and create a new one or something else? It seems like you have a lot of experience with featured pictures, thanks. Surajr7 (talk) 02:30, 8 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi Cmao20. I read your bio and would like to see if you are interested in helping some of my 1800 photos get promoted to FP. I have been adjusting to a Fujifilm GFX 100s II and it is taking some time to relearn after 40 years shooting Nikon.I am sure I have many photos that will obtain FP status but I at times have a hard time selecting the right shot. Photographs by Don Ramey Logan has the complete collection or would you rather I suggest that and you can review before I promote on FP. ? Don (talk) 01:42, 8 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Your thoughts on this shot:

Hi Don, sure thing, I like your photos a lot but I do think sometimes you would be better served by looking through past FPs to see what the forum sees as a good candidate. I also think it would serve you well to be careful about viewing images at full size before making a nomination. For example, in the case of your second suggestion, it looks great at thumbnail size and I was going to tell you to nominate it - lovely composition with the contrast between the sharp angles of the pier and the gentle leading lines of the shoreline, and good use of the rule of thirds. But at full size, it's unfortunately completely unsharp - it looks like motion blur to me. It's often unfair to judge such a huge image at full size since you're basically looking at it through a magnifying glass, but even downsized nothing is really sharp.
Out of your other two suggestions, I think they are QI but not really FP. 1 is also a little blurry though not to the extent of 2, and I don't find the composition particularly striking. 3 is the best of the three shots and a pleasant, well-taken view of Times Square, although some reviewers will likely ask for a perspective correction, which I don't personally find necessary in this case but nonetheless seems to be the expectation.
I don't have time right now to review your whole category but may I suggest this as a possible candidate? I feel that it is one in which composition, colours, and quality all come together to create something beautiful. Cmao20 (talk) 10:41, 8 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
