Massive uploads of large files and server storage

[edit]

Hi, I have seen phab:T427949 and phab:T428086, and I have some related questions. I do upload a lot of large files, and I wonder if there may be some ways to reduced server storage. I also plan to step up a massive upload of PDF files from several sources.

  1. What about TIFF from the Library of Congress (750,977 files)? Are these already compressed?
  2. Should it be useful to permanently delete old versions of PDF uploaded by Special:ListFiles/YannBot (usually uploaded by User:Fæ)?
  3. Should I open a Phabricator ticket about any of these? Thanks, Yann (talk) 10:38, 15 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Yann Hi. Regarding 1: I can take a look. Please file a bug and I'll check. Regarding 2: it really depends, if the total size it's going to save will be below a couple of TBs, I'd say don't bother but let's say if it's saving 20 or 30TB. Sure. Total originals are around 1PB, as a rule of thumb, something that is below 1TB is not really worth your time. Of course, it could be nice to save some storage if we can and is straightforward but if it's complex, don't bother. Regarding 3: Sure. Just make sure to subscribe me so I see it. Thanks! Hi, So for 1., please see phab:T429264. Regarding 2., it would save about 400 GB. Yann (talk) 21:45, 15 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Yann In terms of storage, 400GB is quite small. For comparison, it'd be like 3% of just the tiff uploads of 2026 so far. You'd have to do it thirty times to match that. So don't worry about it. Amir (talk) 13:51, 16 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
