Hello and 1000 pardons,
I see you have uploaded two videos whose names contain the words "January 2021". Is it indeed January 2021 or maybe January 2022? Vcohen (talk) 13:42, 5 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Yes, my mistake, two of them contain a typo (still used to use the previous year): "Drone video of Estonia 2021" is a montage of different footage from last year (2021); but the snowman video is actually from today i.e January 2022 and Drone video of Alavere is also from current year. This was done without consent, and people may not be comfortable with this.
I'm aware taking pictures of people in a public space is legal. Yet it's not very nice to do this without consent, especially if you upload it on Wikimedia or any public platform. Most people do not want a random picture pop-in up when we lookup their name in Google. Also I believe wikipedia has some rules regarding respect of individual life and privacy. You should not put a birthday date for living person for exemple. Similar principle certainly exist for images.
There is also a big gray area regarding the law, that is also quiet country specific. Broadly I can think of:
You are using the name of the people as the file name: this seems a clear breach of GDPR, in my opinion, as the photo + name is definitely personal data.
The pictures are not used to illustrate a wiki article, neither they seem of public interest. The balance between privacy and public interest doesn't seem right to me in this situation.
is this really a public space? Or a semi-public space? That would change the context of the law.
I made a delete request for a picture. But I believe a mass delete is required. At least for a picture not used in wiki and not of famous/public figure people like a politician. What do you think? Can you take care of that?
In my opinion it was a public event because entrance fee was not required.
Secondly these individuals were not just spectators but public speakers which means they could expect being recorded. In fact there were many tv and radio broadcasters present, the talks were broadcast live and recorded and made available for the public to see and hear later. The recordings were made available for everybody also from the organizers, sound, video and pictures shared on different social networks. With names, occupations etc.
So in light of all this I don't think that these pictures in wikimedia commons would affect their privacy any further. As a public speaker or a public figure (politicians etc) on a public event you forsake part of your privacy.
@Gagarine: Are you a specialist on Estonian laws or something? Based on how you consider this a breach of GDPR you clearly don't seem to be a legal specialist nor seem to have much understanding of the topic. It is obvious that those are images of public speakers at a public event. Nominating something for deletion seems like you are bullying ordinary Commons users. People who act like that should be banned from editing in Commons. Kruusamägi (talk) 19:32, 25 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Kruusamägi: I'm not bullying anyone. And I don't think treating me of ban is useful. First, GDPR is a EU law. I'm not a lawyer and don't pretend to be one, I studied law at bachelor level. I didn't think it was necessary to actually bring a lawyer in the mix, but if it is I can ask my juridic insurance their stand on this. It's not a black and white problematic. The basis for allowing recording in public space is the public interest. Some of those picture are public figure, other are not. If I follow your family and take picture of them in public space this is for example definitely not ok.
Now regardless of the law, if it's possible and easy to ask permission, it's a normal curtsy to do it. Perhaps not in Estonia... but the rest of the word definitely.
As the discussion seem not really possible. And their seem to have not interest in actually discussing about the pro and con. I will pursue with a take down notice and let the community decide. --Gagarine (talk) 22:03, 25 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
I maintain that it was a public event because entrance fee was not required and the event took place in a open air location, which was attended by hundreds of participants, the recordings were available to view and listen live and afterwards.
I find that wikipedia shouldn't consist only of parade portraits which are carefully posed, there should be pictures of real people in real situations. On the other hand certainly the media files shouldn't ridicule the subject.
As to the argument of "not used in wikipedia": "goal of the Wikimedia Commons project is to provide a central repository for free images to be used by all Wikimedia projects, including possible future projects. This is not simply a repository for Wikipedia images" (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Featured_picture_candidates#Featured_picture_candidate_policy). A person who's willing to participate in public discussions about their field of expertise is probably somebody, whom we'll be seeing and hearing in the future also, maybe in a prominent position and will probably deserve and wiki-article. That's the idea behind the uploaded portraits without articles.
My initial motivation for taking these pictures and uploading them to commons at all was to help represent more our scientists (which is why I also went through the trouble of writing dozens of wiki articles about them), who tend to be overlooked or shown only in cliché academic settings. Later I expanded it to other representatives in other fields seen in Opinion Festival: teachers, culture figures etc.
The demand for deleting all these pictures taken on a public event seems to me over the top and eradicates my motivation to contribute to commons or wikipedia in the future. Sillerkiil (talk) 07:05, 26 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Ja kus mujal kõik veel, on eksitavalt nimega 'Droonivideo Rebala kivikirstkalmetest'. Juba on hispaaniakeelne wikip artikkel Rebala, kus on juures Jõelähtme kalmete pilt. Need on reaalsed Rebala kivikirstkalmed. Kuid Rebala muuseumi juures on Jõelähtme kalmed. Nii et, kui saad midagi teha, video nime muutmise asjus, siis oleks kena. Thanks for uploading File:Prison house of Ruhnu island in Estonia.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.
Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Hi everyone,
Wikimedia Commons is pleased to finally announce the winners of this year's Picture of the Year 2025 contest! We had some truly incredible finalists to choose from, but the community has spoken.
Here are your top three winning images:
First place: The aftermath of an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on October 9, 2023, leaving widespread destruction in the Rimal area. Attribution: WAFA (Q2915969) / CC-BY-SA 3.0
Second place: Baby cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus) sleeping at Cape cross, Namibia. Attribution: Giles Laurent / CC-BY-SA 4.0
Third place: A gigantic jet photographed from the International Space Station by astronaut Nichole Ayers. Attribution: public domain
You can view the full results and see where all your favorite images placed here: Full 2025 Results
I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.
Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!
